How to drive safely in strong winds - 6 quick tips
1. Plan your journey
No matter the weather conditions, it is always an excellent idea to plan your route before you set off on your journey, especially if you can find a route that is sheltered and less exposed to the weather. You should also let people know your route along with when you plan to leave and arrive at your destination, in case your phone runs out of battery.
2. Driver slower
Strong and high winds can greatly affect the handling and braking ability of your vehicle. Driving slower will help anticipate and react to these surprise gusts of wind and will help you spot any debris that may have been blown onto the road.
3. Keep both hands firmly on the sterling wheel
Like when you are driving in fair weather conditions, you should always hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands. Windy conditions can push your vehicle and jolt your steering wheel, so by having a firm grip you will maintain more control.
4. Keep your distance
Driving conditions become more difficult with windy conditions so you should try and keep extra distance between you and the vehicles inform of you.
As the saying goes ‘only a fool breaks the 2-second rule’ and in these types of conditions, it is worth increasing this even further, particularly if it's raining at the same time. Also, it goes without saying that you should give cyclists, motorcyclists, lorries and buses more room than usual as they are more vulnerable and susceptible to getting blown around.
5. Take extra care when overtaking vehicles
Many of us have seen lorries and other high-sided vehicles get blown across lanes on the motorway when travelling in high winds. With this in mind, you should try and be prepared for this sudden hazard that might present itself when overtaking as the driver of the vehicle responds to a sudden gust.
6. Keep up to date with local weather reports
Finally, if you do need to travel, check local weather reports and traffic news before you head out and whilst you are travelling. This is so you can keep up to date with any road closures that may impact or impede your journey.
